Readers on the go who want to learn more about the state's only academic health science center can sign up for a monthly CONSULT.

CONSULT, the Medical Center's online newsletter, launches today. At the beginning of each month, the Division of Public Affairs will deliver CONSULT by email to subscribers, who can access the brand new publication on smartphones, tablets, computers or virtually any other electronic devices.

Although CONSULT is geared toward an outside audience, Tom Fortner, chief public affairs and communications officer, said the email newsletter will include plenty of content UMMC faculty, staff and students should find interesting - and engaging.

Public Affairs’ staff writers and their respective primary areas of responsibility include, front row from left, Annie Oeth, pediatrics; Bruce Coleman, Medical Center operations and administration; and Alana Bowman, Schools of Dentistry, Nursing and Health Related Professions; and back row from left, Ruth Cummins, clinical operations, emergency services and telehealth; Gary Pettus, School of Medicine; and Karen Bascom, research and School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences.

“In CONSULT, readers will have the opportunity to learn more about the cutting-edge clinical advances, innovative educational programs and groundbreaking research occurring every day at UMMC,” Fortner said. “Plus, CONSULT will regularly showcase our experts' best advice for living a healthy and mindful life.”

CONSULT replaces a print publication - CenterView - that had been produced by Public Affairs since 2009. UMMC followers who previously picked up copies of CenterView in display racks throughout the Medical Center campus or received the publication in the mail now have the opportunity to receive CONSULT in their inbox.

Fortner said CONSULT has the potential to extend the boundaries of public awareness about UMMC and its programs.

“This newsletter will connect all readers - those who work at UMMC, receive Medical Center services, live nearby or who simply want to learn more about our institution - to the state's leading health care provider, educator and discovery enterprise,” he said. “We intend to tell UMMC's story - which is so much a part of Mississippi's story - in a way that hasn't been possible on a large scale, by delivering it directly to the citizens of our state.

“We're proud of this institution and we invite everyone interested in the Medical Center to sign up to receive CONSULT in their email today.”

Subscribing to CONSULT is free and easy: Readers may click here to submit their name and valid email address. Those who subscribe will receive a confirmation email to verify their subscription. Readers may unsubscribe at any time.
