Instead of just reading about the Medical Center’s milestones and achievements, take the opportunity to see where much of these salient moments occurred – with History Happened Here: A Walking Tour of the University of Mississippi Medical Center Campus. A 60-to-90 minute in-person survey of several locations on the UMMC campus is available by signing up online or using your smartphone to scan a QR code posted in locations around the Medical Center. Part of the UMMC Museum of Medical History Initiative, tours are open to students, current or former faculty members, current or former staff members, alumni and visitors. Dr. Ralph Didlake, director of the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities, developed the tour, which includes such stops as “Civil War Union Artillery Battery,” “Medical Firsts: Lung and Heart Transplant Rooms,” “Freedom Summer Tragedy,” the “Asylum Hill Project” and many more. Medical Center pioneers are also highlighted. The tour ends with a viewing of the current exhibits on display just inside the entrance to the Rowland Medical Library.
