NIH taps neurobiology chair for study section post; pathology residents cop research honors

The National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review will have a new Integrative and Clinical Endocrinology and Reproduction Study Section chair July 1: UMMC's chair of neurobiology and anatomical sciences. Meanwhile, several residents and trainees captured awards during the Department of Pathology's inaugural Research Day event.

Dr. Michael Lehman, professor and chair of neurobiology and anatomical sciences, has been selected to chair the Integrative and Clinical Endocrinology and Reproduction Study Section for the National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review.

Lehman's term as chair begins July 1 and ends June 30, 2019.

Study section membership represents a major commitment of professional time and energy and a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort. Service on a study section requires mature judgment and objectivity and the ability to work effectively in a group.

The skill and leadership offered by the chairperson determine to a significant extent the effectiveness and efficiency of the review group.

Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by their research accomplishments, publications, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors.

 


 

Pathology residents earn inaugural research day awards

The Department of Pathology hosted its first Research Day May 4.

During the event, faculty and trainees from multiple departments presented 52 posters and 12 pathology department members gave oral presentations of their work.

The awards for best posters went to:

Dr. Kristen Adams, resident in pathology, won first place in the poster competition, while Kathryn Hellman, graduate student in pathology, won the second-place prize.

Award finalists included graduate students Lin Wang and Nasir Butt and residents Dr. Anas Bernieh and Dr. Katie Tumminello.

The event was co-organized by Dr. Christian Gomez, director of research in the department and Research Day chair; Dr. Junming Wang and Dr. Anas Berneih, co-chairs of the Scientific Program Committee; and Dr. Xinchun Zhou and Dr. Xiu Liu, co-chairs of the Scientific Abstracts Committee.

Robin Suggs and Keonna Clincy provided administrative support. Genentech and Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsored the awards and the event.
