Tonya Moore of Jackson, chief learning officer for University of Mississippi Health Care, was one of 12 people chosen nationally for the 2011 Up and Comers in Modern Healthcare magazine.
This program, co-sponsored by Witt/Kieffer, an Oak Brook, Ill.-based executive search firm, honors rising young stars in the health-care management field. Nominated candidates are named to the final list of executives based on "significant contributions in health-care administration, management or policy," according to Modern Healthcare's website. The article, featuring Moore, was published in the Sept. 19 issue. Moore, a native of Fayette, said she was both surprised and honored to be in a position to spotlight her faith, hard work and commitment to excellence. "Personally, I am tickled that my son, Ralph, will enjoy seeing public recognition for the countless hours that I labor at home studying and working. Professionally, I am honored to serve as a role model for so many people at UMHC and beyond. Being an inspiration to others is by far the greatest reward for me," she said. Moore is currently working on a Ph.D. in nursing research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She began her career as a medical surgical nurse at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Vicksburg in 1995 and joined the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1997 as a staff nurse. Her career path led to a clinical nurse educator role. Moore now oversees nonclinical learning programs, training and curriculum development for UMHC, the clinical programs of UMMC. She helps staff develop skills to improve customer service and communication. Moore considers the selection to the Up and Comers list to be as much about the medical center's milestones over the last few years as her own. "I am also honored to be the 'face' and 'story' behind UMHC's many accomplishments. This recognition is yet another way that we are able to spotlight the great people and work of UMHC and Mississippi," she said.
