In his new role, O’Mara will report to Dr. James E. Keeton, vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine. He will work closely with other senior leaders of UMMC’s health system, focusing on strategic planning, clinical quality initiatives, relationships with community hospitals and physicians.

A native of Jackson, O’Mara graduated from the University of Mississippi. He earned his medical degree at Tulane University and completed his surgical residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was chief resident. He completed his vascular surgery fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago, returned to serve on the surgical faculty at Hopkins, and then came back home to Mississippi. He currently lives in Ridgeland.

He joined the Medical Center last August as a special advisor to Keeton after a long career as a vascular surgeon in the private medical community in Jackson. He continues a limited practice in vascular surgery at UMMC.
