Since its creation almost two years ago, the UMMC Opioid Task Force has taken the fight against opioid addiction and abuse to the classroom, the clinic and the community. Future physicians, nurse practitioners, first responders and others will now be exposed to more cutting-edge training at the Medical Center, thanks to a global company’s gift of an advanced anesthesia machine. As cases of the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 continue to be diagnosed worldwide, Medical Center experts are equipping employees and staff with the vital information they need to be prepared should UMMC receive a patient with the new strain, first detected in late 2019 in Wuhan City, China.

The John D. Bower School of Population Health welcomed Heidi Margulis, a long-time government and regulatory affairs professional at Humana, to campus as the school’s first executive in residence. She spent last week sharing her experience improving population health throughout the country with a “one size fits none” approach.

To promote diversity in the biomedical sciences, UMMC’s M.D./Ph.D. Program is partnering with the American Physician Scientists Association to host a Physician Scientist Interest Day for underrepresented students on Feb. 29.
Dr. Barbara Mauldin has received many accolades for being an outstanding dentist, a valuable community member and even an accomplished ballroom dancer. But she says being named Dental Alumna of the Year is particularly special to her.
