Homeless patient care focus of UMMC students' lesson

Learning to work together to care for a homeless veteran was the goal of an interprofessional exercise involving medical, nursing and pharmacy students. During the simulation at the School of Nursing, students could listen to the lung function of a manikin named Pete Prince Jr., observe his vital signs and advocate for him as their patient. The annual exercise teaches students the importance of every care team member.

UMMC's largest Accelerated BSN class answers nursing's call

The largest number of Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing students at the Medical Center will answer the need for more nurses. At UMMC, students began their studies Jan. 11 with online classes and in-person labs. Within a year, they’ll be taking exams to become registered nurses.

Pandemic sparks classroom flexibility, staff creativity for fall semester

When COVID-19 reached the University of Mississippi Medical Center's academic halls last spring, each of the seven schools on campus quickly transitioned traditional classrooms to online learning opportunities. While the pandemic continues to ravage the state five months later, the Council of Deans has planned a hybrid approach to educating the state's future health care workforce this fall.

SON's school-based clinics expand behavioral health care

A new three-year grant is enabling the School of Nursing to continue its critical work in schools in Jackson and the Mississippi Delta, and is providing expanded behavioral health services with the addition of a full-time psychiatric nurse practitioner.
