Fire Watch for all Main Campus Buildings
Tuesday, December 27, 2022
TO:All UMMC Personnel
FROM:Dr. Jonathan Wilson, Chief Administrative Officer
SUBJECT: Fire Watch for all Main Campus Buildings
Due to the extreme cold weather over the weekend, we are experiencing low water pressure for the main Jackson campus effecting all fire suppression and fire sprinkler systems. The entire main campus is under Fire Watch until further notice.
During the Fire Watch, we ask the following:
- Immediately cease all hot works (use of Bunsen burners, welding soldering, or any similar spark or flame-producing activities) being conducted at any main campus locations until water pressures for our fire suppression systems is restored to within normal ranges.
- Remain on a heightened state of awareness to any potential fire-related issues.
- Be vigilant in all fire safety measures.
- Avoid a buildup of combustible trash in any area.
- Review and follow the RACE procedures.
As always, in case of a fire, use the RACE and PASS procedures.
RACE:
- Rescue and remove any person that is in immediate danger.
- Alert other staff members to the problem. Make sure that the alarm is transmitted by calmly telling coworkers, dialing 4-6666 and pulling a manual fire alarm.
- Confine the fire to the room of origin by closing the door after making sure all persons are safely out of the room. Close all other doors in the area to prevent the spread of fire and smoke into unaffected spaces.
- If at all possible, smother the fire using a fire extinguisher through the PASS procedure. However, do not put yourself in unnecessary danger attempting to extinguish a fire.
PASS: (Steps for using a fire extinguisher)
- Pull the pin.
- Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
- Squeeze the handles together.
- Sweep side to side at the base of the fire.
Thank you.
