Appointment of Chief of Medical Staff
February 1, 2022
TO:Faculty, Staff and Students
FROM:Dr. Alan Jones, Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs
SUBJECT: Appointment of Chief of Medical Staff
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Zeb Henson as chief of medical staff, a change in leadership within the Office of the Chief Medical Officer. His appointment is effective immediately.
Dr. Henson, associate professor of medicine and medical associate chief of staff in the office of CMO Dr. Michael Henderson, assumes this role following the untimely passing of Dr. Kirk Reid, who held the position since January 2021. In addition to his position as chief of medical staff, Dr. Reid served as associate professor of anesthesiology. His contributions to the Medical Center and as an anesthesiologist and educator were memorialized in an obituary in eCV last week.
As chief of medical staff, Dr. Henson will serve as a bridge between the medical staff and the hospital to ensure they are working in unison for the good of patients and the Medical Center. He will chair the Medical Executive Committee, which oversees the credentialing and privileging of the medical staff and addresses issues and concerns raised by or about medical staff.
Dr. Henson will work to engage the medical staff in advancing the priorities of UMMC. He will facilitate communication between medical staff and all groups that oversee and help their practices.
A Mississippi State University graduate, Dr. Henson received his M.D. and his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at UMMC, where he also was recognized as chief resident in Internal Medicine. He joined the UMMC faculty as an instructor in 2009 and currently is director of the Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program, in addition to serving on numerous committees and task forces.
As a clinician, teacher and mentor, Dr. Henson is well respected, inspirational and well rounded. A clinician in both the adult and pediatric worlds, he has demonstrated excellence in education and patient care. His thoughtful and insightful communication style will be an asset to his new role.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Henson as our new chief of medical staff.
