SOPH and the Mississippi Academy of Sciences

The Mississippi Academy of Sciences will host its 90th Annual Meeting in the summer of 2026, marking an important milestone for one of the state’s longest standing scientific organizations. MAS has served as a valued platform for the independent research of faculty and students from the John D. Bower School of Population Health, providing opportunities to share findings, exchange ideas and engage with scientists across disciplines.

MAS’s core mission centers on communication among scientists. Each year, the Academy convenes an annual meeting featuring keynote addresses, symposia, workshops, scientific paper presentations and exhibits. Research is presented through divisional meetings that span a wide range of fields including health sciences, computer science and statistics, microbiology and immunology, psychology and behavioral neuroscience, science education and many others. This breadth makes MAS a uniquely interdisciplinary forum that aligns closely with SOPH’s population focused and collaborative approach to research.

The annual meeting also plays an important role in scholarly dissemination. Abstracts from presented papers are published as part of the meeting program and as a supplement to the Journal of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences, extending the reach of research conducted in Mississippi. In addition, MAS publishes Science in Mississippi, a journal that features news and articles relevant to the scientific community across the state.

Beyond research presentation, MAS has a strong commitment to science education and community engagement. The Academy supports youth programs such as the Mississippi Junior Academy of Science, contributes to statewide science education initiatives and maintains partnerships with organizations including the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. MAS also serves as a resource for state agencies and policymakers by providing access to scientific expertise and offering guidance on science related issues affecting Mississippi communities.

SOPH’s continued participation in MAS reflects a shared commitment to advancing science, supporting education and applying research to real world challenges. As MAS celebrates its 90th year, SOPH faculty and students remain an important part of this statewide scientific network, contributing research that informs policy, improves health and strengthens the role of science in Mississippi.
