Nurse Externship Program

The nurse externship is a temporary and part-time employment opportunity for nursing students who meet specific criteria.  Interested students will gain valuable skills and knowledge in the only academic medical center in the state of Mississippi. Also, as the state’s only Level (1) trauma center, the hospital offers high acuity patients in a diverse population. Students are guided by experienced nursing staff in the everyday work life of the professional nurse. In working alongside experienced nurses, students will aid in providing hands-on patient care and clinical reasoning skills. The knowledge bestowed upon the student will assist with enhancing the patient experience and increasing quality in nursing.

Past Participant Feedback

"Being at the Batson Specialty Clinic has taught me so much and made me feel more confident as a nurse. You have made sure that I understood everything and always explained things thoroughly to where I could feel confident doing it. The skills you have taught and helped me with will be used throughout my time as a nurse and I am so thankful. I have had the best time at this clinic with you and the others!"

"I will always be grateful to have been able to have this experience this summer with such an awesome, genuine, intelligent preceptor. The knowledge you have given me will be most helpful in the rest of my schooling, along with my career as a nurse. I could not have asked for a better person to be able to enjoy this insightful time with, and am so glad you were the preceptor I got to have. Most importantly, thank you for showing me kindness and for helping me through every step of this externship. I wish you nothing but the very best in your career and hope to see you again someday."

"Thank you for taking the time to teach me this summer. Even in the moments where you really did not have time to teach, you always stopped and made sure I learned something from each experience."

"This summer has been arguably the greatest learning experience I have ever received. I absolutely learned more in a single 12-hour shift than I ever could in a semester of classes. When I first started nursing school, I honestly didn’t even know what an O2 sat monitor was. Flash forward a year later, and I am inserting catheters and pushing mannitol! Obviously I have come a long way and I see now that book knowledge and clinical experience are two completely different worlds, but that you can’t have one without the other."

"Thank you for making yourself available to me to answer all my questions (and I know there were a ton of them), and for asking me questions to help me gain critical thinking skills. You allowed me to take a large role in patient care, while keeping me on track with completing orders and filling out appropriate documentation. You have been a great role model for me. I really want to compliment your patient care and how good you are with the patients as well as their family members. I could see that they all really love you!"
