Herbal Supplements and Their Value in the Dental Worlds

Course Description:

Americans commonly include natural or herbal supplements in their daily routine, but may not consider the actions or interactions with dental care. This continuing education course will name common herbal agents used in the United States, describe the agents’ usage, and possible interactions with medications or procedures related to dental care. Additionally, herbal agents occasionally used by the lay public to supplement at-home dental management will be presented.

Objectives:

  • Describe the prevalence of and rationale for herbal supplements as pharmaceutical use by consumers
  • Explain safety issues of herbal supplements pertaining to toxicity, and herb/drug interactions
  • Identify valid resources when checking the efficacy and safety of herbal supplements
