Population health management graduates apply skills to practice

There were no caps or gowns, but there were diplomas and smiles as the John D. Bower School of Population Health honored the first graduates of its Executive Masters in Population Health Management Program. Family Medicine tries new responsible opioid prescribing tools

With the support of the Centers for Disease Control, the UMMC Department of Family Medicine is collecting data to determine how well it is meeting five of the CDC’s guidelines for opioid prescribing. Providers in the department are also using a new tool in Epic that reminds them to meet and check certain criteria.

With her passion for the arts and her compassion for others, Frances Anne Fortner brightened the lives of everyone who knew her. On Tuesday, the Medical Center dedicated its Healing Arts Program to the daughter of UMMC’s Tom Fortner and artist Laurilyn Fortner. This series of creative and performing arts events will be known as “Franny’s Hour.”

Grant funding boosts HIV care access throughout Southeast

Too often, people who live with HIV don’t get the care they need for a number of reasons: a lack of transportation, an inability to miss work or HIV stigma, to name a few. The Merck Foundation’s HIV Care Connect program is helping the Medical Center break down barriers to provider access.

Patients living with HIV receive “Helping HAND” to conquer addictions

Living with HIV has its challenges, including access to health care and the stigma associated with the infection. HIV-infected people who also struggle with substance abuse can have a tougher time keeping their disease suppressed. UMMC's “Helping HAND” program, offered through the Adult Special Care Clinic, gives those patients a boost to kick their addictions.
