Dr. Elizabeth Carr, a dental hygiene faculty member since 2006 and a three-time recipient of UMMC’s Norman C. Nelson Order of Teaching Excellence Award, has been named chair of dental hygiene. She will take over for Dr. Beckie Barry, who served as chair for 15 years and is retiring at the end of the year. Read More

School of Dentistry dean receives career honor; ascends to board presidency

Dr. David Felton, School of Dentistry dean, received two prestigious honors earlier this month. He was awarded the Dan Gordon Lifetime Achievement Award by the American College of Prosthodontists, and he was elected president of the American Board of Prosthodontics.

School works to fill Mississippi's dental gap

The School of Dentistry is working to address the severe shortage of dental providers across the state as highlighted by a recent national report. But the SOD has its challenges: The school can’t accept more than 40 students per class, not nearly enough to keep pace with the number of dentists who retire each year.

New chair of pediatric dentistry settles into southern hospitality

Dr. Christopher Hughes, a Boston native, left Rutgers School of Dental Medicine in New Jersey to move to Jackson, Mississippi to become the chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, shocking friends and colleagues. He’s never lived south of the Mason-Dixon Line, but since moving here, he’s come to appreciate Mississippi’s low cost of living, easy commute, delicious food and ubiquitous hospitality.

Dental school's longest serving employee to retire

After 44 years, Agnes Triplett is going home. Triplett, executive assistant to the dean of the School of Dentistry, is retiring June 29. She's been at the helm of the SOD's fifth floor for each of the nine deans who have served the school, and with her goes a wealth of knowledge.
