Two generations of mentor-mentee, one passion: materials science

Mentors and mentees at the 2021 UPSTART Symposium. This is a wonderful event in the life of the School of Dentistry. It gives the opportunity for the entire school to see our dental and undergraduate students present their summer research projects.

Congratulations Ph.D. candidate Kadie Nobles for successfully defending your Ph.D. proposal. Kadie's research was titled "Modifying the Surface of PEEK and PEKK for Enhanced Osseointegration and Bacteria Resistance by Optimizing a Sulfonation Process". Mentored by Dr. Randall Williamson.

Jared Cobb, mentored by Dr. Janorkar, received the Robert A. Malhafey, Jr. Memorial Award. Jared was selected unanimously! The award recognizes the outstanding potential and talent of a graduate student. Hats off, Jared!

Kartikeya Jodha successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation on April 7th, 2021. He was mentored by Dr. Griggs (top right picture). His Ph.D. has resulted in 4 awards and 1 first-author paper. Congratulations, Kartikeya!

Megha Satpathy was awarded the 2021 GWIMS Emerging Star award! This award acknowledges a female UMMC student, resident, or fellow who has achieved significant academic accomplishments. Congratulations Megha!

Haden successfully defended his dissertation on April 22nd, 2021. His milestone took place at 9:00 am, and it happened on Microsoft Teams. For his dissertation research, Haden modified the surface of titanium structures to enhance the photocatalytic and antimicrobial properties. Haden has published 3 manuscripts from his graduate work, 1 being a first author publication. While in our graduate program, Haden was chosen for the scholarship to participate in the Millsaps Business Advantage Program. His research work has been awarded the 2018 Society of Biomaterials Travel Award and the 2019 Travel Award to ASTM International Conference on Additive Manufacturing. Haden is being hired by the Army Aviation and Missile Center as an Aerospace Engineer in the Structures and Materials Division. We are very so proud of your accomplishments! Many congratulations, Haden!
