Student Safety Advisory Board

Purpose

The purpose of the UMMC Student Safety Advisory Board (SSAB) is to provide a forum for student collaboration and feedback with the UMMC Police & Public Safety Department (UMMC PD) regarding fair, equitable, and effective police practices. The Advisory Board works collaboratively with UMMC PD to identify problems, develop and recommend solutions to UMMC PD and serve as a resource regarding community safety issues. The SSAB will be a key communications liaison by expressing community concerns to UMMC PD and sharing relevant information with community members from UMMC PD.

UMMC PD SSAB members provide communication pathways between their school community and UMMC PD.  Through regular meetings with UMMC PD, delivered through dialogue and communication, SSAB provides recommendations on issues such as, but not limited to, school-level and campus wide safety & security, new initiatives, policies, and planning of events that affect students such as personal protection/active threat training, internet safety and general awareness training and seminars.

SSAB Goals

To facilitate UMMC PD working in a collaborative manner with representatives from UMMC Schools of; 1) Dentistry 2) Health Related Professions, 3) Graduate Studies, 4) Medicine, 5) Nursing, 6) Pharmacy, and 7) Population Health to identify possible solutions to safety and security concerns that impact the campus community.

To insure reasonable identified solutions for safety and security concerns on issues such as, but not limited to, school-level and campus wide safety & security, new initiatives, policies, and planning of events that affect students such as personal protection/active shooter/threat training, internet safety and general awareness training and seminars.

To provide a forum through which student representatives from all 7 UMMC Schools can bring safety and security concerns to seek resolution.   To improve channels of communication between police and students.  UMMC PD will elevate concerns of students and serve as advocates for justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • Create a workable model in problem-solving around community crime, quality-of-life, and student centric public safety issues.
  • Further strengthen community policing and to insure community safety needs are met.
