About

The University of Mississippi Medical Center Police and Security Department (UMMC PD) is a professional, full-service law enforcement agency providing police and security services to our campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We investigate reported criminal activity against our students, faculty, staff, patients and visitors earnestly. The dedicated men and women of UMMC PD strive to reduce crime and improve the quality of life on our campus.

Police officers enforce all the rules and regulations of the Medical Center, statutes of the State of Mississippi, and the United States of America within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Medical Center according to Section 37-101-15 of the Mississippi Code of 1972, annotated.

UMMC PD serves the community by providing essential public safety services on UMMC campuses across Mississippi.

Some of our major responsibilities include:

  • Training and planning for comprehensive responses to manmade and natural  disasters
  • Responding to campus emergencies (health and crime)
  • Directing the University’s compliance with the federal Clery Act (UMMC Alerts, Timely Warnings, Annual Security Reports),
  • Managing campus security cameras and electronic access to facilities
  • Investigating and monitoring possible threats to campus
  • Managing and storing criminal and traffic records

UMMC PD is a full-service Mississippi State police agency with sworn police officers who have full law enforcement authority.  To include some of the following specialized services:

University Police and Public Safety proactively connects with the UMMC community by offering free educational programs and services, attending community meetings and events, and collaborating with University and locally-based agencies and services that help foster a safe and healthy community.

Report suspicious behavior promptly to Police

All reports of criminal activity will be handled and investigated appropriately and professionally. In addition to crime prevention, the department carries out several programs and services promoting safety and security. They include: 

  • Escort service 
    Escorts are available at night and on weekends. To request the service, call the Emergency Communication Center (Dispatch) at (601) 984-1360 (4-1360) or contact one of the Police officers on duty. 
  • Public information 
    The UMMC Police and Public Safety reports crime statistics for offenses occurring on the campus of UMMC following the 1998 Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. The Daily Crime Log includes the date and time the crime was reported, the date and time the crime occurred, the location of the crime, the nature of the crime, and the disposition of the complaint if known. A hard copy of the Daily Crime Log is available, upon request, during regular business hours (Monday – Friday, 8:00 to 4:30), from the Public Safety division in the Z Building at 2500 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39110.  
  • Crime prevention 
    Classes Upon request. Police will provide crime prevention education on many security-related topics. 
  • Lost and found 
    UMMC Police and Public Safety maintain lost and found property. Property may be turned in or claimed (601) 984-1360 or by visiting the Alumni House during regular business hours Monday – Friday, 8:00 to 4:30.
