About Surgery

UMMC Surgery provides a range of services and advanced techniques, from a variety of general surgeries to specialized procedures like Mississippi’s only transplant and hepatobiliary programs.

The UMMC difference

Since its founding in 1955 by Dr. James D. Hardy, the surgical department at UMMC has provided innovative and groundbreaking surgical care.

  • The first human-to-human lung transplant was performed by Dr. James D. Hardy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1963.
  • Mississippi’s only transplant program provides care to those in need of heart, kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants.

UMMC Surgery continues advancing the field by providing compassionate patient care, clinical and technical excellence, research opportunities, and education in the state’s only academic medical center.

Our highly skilled surgeons provide general and specialized surgical procedures and techniques, and all share a focus on expanding services to include the most complex, high-level surgical care available in Mississippi.

Our surgical teams work closely with other medical specialties to provide multidisciplinary, coordinated care appropriate to each patient’s unique medical needs. Our goal is that every patient receives individualized care in a patient-first experience.
