MS - Biomedical Sciences Program Prerequisites

Although a BS or BA degree in biology, chemistry or another natural or physical science is preferred, graduates in other disciplines who have an interest in Biomedical Science are encouraged to apply. However, because of the rigorous nature of the curriculum, all applicants are encouraged to take, or demonstrate proficiency in, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, General Physics, General Biology, college-level Algebra and Trigonometry, or Calculus, and at least one advanced biology course (e.g., Genetics, Biochemistry, Comparative Anatomy, etc.)

Admission is competitive and based on letters of support, your personal statement, academic record (GPA), and performance on the GRE, MCAT or DAT. Preference is given to students with an overall GPA ≥ 3.0 on a 4 point scale and to those with scores of:

  • ≥ 295 on the combined verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or
  • ≥ 492 (new format) or ≥20 (old format) MCAT, or
  • ≥ 15 on the DAT.
Applicants to the MS BMS degree program who are participants in the Professional Portal Program must be recommended by and meet criteria established by, the Admissions Committee of either the UMMC School of Medicine (SOM) or School of Dentistry (SOD).

Note: Because of space constraints, this program is limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents of the United States of America (green card holders). In addition, because an important aspect of UMMC's mission is training healthcare providers for Mississippi, preference is given to Mississippi residents.
