Main ContentTotal and Partial Hip Replacement
UMMC Orthopaedic’s joint replacement specialist will determine whether a total or partial hip joint replacement is needed to increase the patient’s mobility, improve function of the hip joint, and relieve pain. Hip replacement, or arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove diseased bone tissue and cartilage from the hip joint. The head of the femur (ball) and the acetabulum (socket) are replaced with new, artificial parts (prostheses) with small incisions made in front of the hip. Whether the new joint will cemented into place or uncemented, allowing bone to grow to the prosthesis, will be determined by the surgeon.
Services we offer
Hip resurfacing
Hip resurfacing, a newer technique for hip replacement, is most commonly performed in younger patients. The acetabulum (socket) is replaced with an artificial piece, but the femur remains intact. The femur is covered, or “resurfaced,” with a durable component.
Navigational assisted surgery
Orthopaedic specialists use computer-assisted navigation to increase precision in hip and knee joint replacement surgery. The image-guided navigation system is basically a global positioning system for the surgeon. The implant-specific technology helps with presurgical planning as well as surgical procedures.
Total joint replacement program
Whether or not to undergo elective joint replacement surgery is an important decision that will help a patient regain quality of life and move toward a healthier lifestyle. Our comprehensive total joint replacement program includes the involvement of people who care about the patient—family and friends, the surgeon, occupational and physical therapists, nurses, patient care technicians, case managers, a program coordinator, and many other team members. With their help, patients who opt for joint replacement surgery will soon be on the road to a more active lifestyle.
