All infants discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit at Wiser Hospital for Women & Infants are appointed to the NICU follow-up program for continuing care. The majority of infants have very low birth weight (VLBW) of less than 1,500 grams (3 pounds, 4 ounces) or congenital anomalies.
After the first clinic visit, infants are referred to their primary care physician. However, chronically ill or technology-dependent infants continue to be seen in the NICU follow-up clinic as needed.
VLBW babies and other infants at risk for developmental disabilities are seen for developmental evaluation by a physical therapist and psychologist at eight, 16, 24 and 36 months. Infants are referred to other subspecialists (ophthalmology, audiology, cardiac, surgery, genetics, etc.) as clinically indicated.
