Pain Management

University of Mississippi Medical Center pain physicians, psychologists, experienced clinical nurses, and pain clinic staff provide individualized plans to help patients manage acute or chronic pain.

This practice, which includes the Pain Management Center, has the largest number of board-certified pain physicians in Mississippi. Our care team uses a multidisciplinary approach to assess and treat painful conditions, including neuropathic, sympathetic, and visceral pain syndromes and cancer pain.

UMMC's Pain Management Center is staffed by board-certified physicians and a team of experienced support staff who work with referring providers to offer optimal pain control for each patient. Outpatient procedures are performed at the Jackson Medical Mall with state-of-the-art equipment and innovative technology. Patients also are seen at the University Physicians Pavilion and community outreach clinics.

With today's new and improved pain medications and management approaches, there is no reason for anyone to tolerate severe pain. By effectively treating pain, patients heal faster, have fewer complications following surgery, and are able to go home and resume normal activities sooner.

Services we offer

Acute pain services

Acute pain may come from inflammation, tissue damage, injury, illness, or recent surgery and is of short duration. It usually ends after the underlying cause is treated or has been resolved. The UMMC acute pain service (APS) is committed to helping patients during medical procedures and to recover with the least amount of pain. Our specialized team of clinicians uses state-of-the-art post-operative or post-traumatic pain control medications and methods, including epidural analgesia, nerve blocks, local anesthetics, opioids, and anti-inflammatory drugs. The APS is one of the few in the country using ultrasound guidance in nerve blocks.

Biofeedback counseling

The trained staff at UMMC works with patients to provide biofeedback, a non-drug method of self-regulating behavior to manage acute and chronic pain, especially helpful to headache or migraine sufferers. Patients learn to control headache-related physical functions (breathing, heart rate, etc.) to prevent or minimize headaches. Electronic equipment senses changes in the body that signal a looming headache, alerting the patient to take steps to ward off the pain with relaxation, medication, or stress management.

Biofeedback training is offered at the Clinical Sciences building. Other services include headache intake evaluations/consultations and other behavioral therapy tailored for those who suffer with headaches. Most patients are physician referrals.

Cancer/chronic pain services

Chronic pain is long-standing pain that persists beyond the usual recovery period or occurs along with a chronic health condition, such as arthritis or cancer. It can be intermittent or continuous, and it may affect sufferers to the point that they cannot work, eat properly, participate in physical activity, or enjoy life.

UMMC's specialized medical team uses a multidisciplinary, flexible approach to provide safe, state-of-the-art pain care for patients suffering from cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Clinicians work with patients and families to understand the pain process and options available for pain relief.

Head pain services

The head pain clinic is a cooperative effort between the UMMC psychiatry and neurology departments as well as the patient's own physician.
