About the Department

The Department of Population Health Science at the John D. Bower School of Population Health is dedicated to advancing health outcomes through education, research, and community partnerships. Located on the University of Mississippi Medical Center campus in Jackson, our department is well-positioned to leverage on the existing research and educational opportunities of a leading academic health science center. We prepare students from across Mississippi and beyond—including international scholars—for impactful careers by combining rigorous methodological training with practical application. Faculty expertise spans epidemiology, data science, implementation science, and community engagement, with achievements reflected in publications, research grants, and translational initiatives. We highlight the successes of our graduates, who enter dynamic career paths in research, policy, health systems, and community leadership. Rooted in Mississippi—a state with a rich culture and unique resources as well as significant health challenges—we embrace the opportunity to innovate, collaborate, and lead in creating healthier futures for all communities locally and beyond.

We approach our mission with an eye to helping solve Mississippi’s unique health problems and contributing to generalizable knowledge about improving the health of populations.
