Oral Care Tips for People with Swallowing Issues

Daily mouth care is very important. People with trouble swallowing are at a higher risk for aspiration (food or liquid entering the airway instead of the stomach). This can lead to aspiration pneumonia. Good oral hygiene helps reduce the risk of pneumonia and other infections from occurring.

Daily oral care decreases the presence of bacteria in the mouth, removes particles of food that may accidentally get left behind, and helps keep the tissues of the mouth moist and clean. If you are not eating by mouth it is extremely important that you still maintain daily oral hygiene. Saliva has enzymes that help digest food and antibodies that protect against infection – so it is important to keep your mouth as moist and clean as possible.

You will need:

  1. Soft bristled tooth brush or oral swab
  2. Over the counter alcohol free antiseptic
  3. Brush/sponge/clean all areas of the mouth:
    • Teeth, gums, inside of both cheeks, tongue, and roof of mouth
  4. Biotene products if you struggle with dry mouth (toothpaste, rinse, oral spray).
  5. Mouth moisturizer to the inside of mouth and lips.

Additional recommendations:

  1. Remove and soak dentures. Brush dentures at least once per day.
  2. Avoid spicy, hot, or acidic foods.
  3. Complete oral care before each meal.
  4. Complete oral care at least 3-4 times per day.
