Procedural Specific Platelet and Plasma Guidelines

Standard transfusion thresholds for plasma and platelets for non-cirrhotic patients (please see referenced paper, Part II- Recommendations, for more information)

Low risk procedure

High risk procedure

Paracentesis, Thoracentesis, Lumbar puncture, Catheter exchange

Biliary interventions, TIPS, Ablations, Deep biopsies or abscess drainage

PT/INR and platelet count not routinely recommended, unless bleeding risk

PT/INR and platelet count routinely recommended

Thresholds:
Correct INR to 2.0-3.0
Transfuse platelets if < 20

Thresholds:
Correct INR to 1.5-1.8
Transfuse platelets if < 50

Emergency critical shortage transfusion thresholds

  • The transfusion threshold criteria for low risk procedures will be applied to high risk procedures
