Finding out what allergens trigger your child's bodily defenses are an important first step in effective allergy treatment. Tests conducted by Children's of Mississippi allergists can help pinpoint allergies to pollen, molds, dust mites, animal dander, insect stings, foods and some medicines.
Allergy shots (or immunotherapy) are aimed at increasing tolerance to allergens that trigger symptoms. The incremental increases of allergen exposure cause the immune system to become less sensitive to the substance. Immunotherapy also reduces the inflammation that characterizes rhinitis and asthma.
An allergist or immunologist is the most qualified to tell you if allergy shots are right for your child. Allergy shots are recommended for patients with allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis/conjunctivitis and stinging insect allergy. They are not recommended for food allergies.
Shots are administered at the Lakeland and University Physicians – Grants Ferry clinics at various times during the week. Contact the Lakeland office at (601) 815-1078 for more information.
