On behalf of the UMMC School of Nursing Research and Scholarship Planning Committee, we are pleased to announce the 2024 School of Nursing Research and Scholarship Day Call for Abstracts! The theme this year is "Transforming Health Care Through Nursing Research and Evidence-based Practice." We invite students, faculty and staff to submit an abstract in nursing research to be considered for a poster or podium presentation.

This year's research and scholarship day explores the role of nursing scholarly work in the evolution of health care in Mississippi as well as the global community. The UMMC SON is seeking abstracts that specifically focus on the clinical and academic implications of the research findings in nursing science.

The SON Research and Scholarship Day will be held on April 3, 2024 at the Norman C. Nelson Student Union. The deadline for abstract submission is Monday, January 29, 2024. Guidelines for abstract submission can be found below. Please note a change from last year’s format.

All abstracts will be submitted through the collection platform of Oxford Abstracts. If you do not already have an account, you will be asked to create one using your UMMC email. You will immediately receive a verification email and once verified will be able to submit your abstract.

Abstract submission must include the following:

  • Title of Presentation
  • Abstract* (limited to 300 words): Describe your research or other scholarly work with an emphasis on transforming healthcare through nursing research and evidence-based practice. Abstracts should be submitted in the format below and will be reviewed competitively.

    If the study was supported in full or in part by a grant, include the grant number and granting organization in the notes section on the submission page.
  • Author: If faculty/staff have contributed to the research/program concept or abstract development, please include them as a co-author.
  • Abstract Format: see general format below. Abstracts previously presented at another conference will be accepted, but must be in the general format
  • Desired Presentation Format: Poster Presentation, Podium Presentation, or No Preference

General Guidelines for Abstract Submission

Completed or works in progress, including research studies, case studies, literature reviews, critical analysis, scholarly projects (as defined as evidence-based or quality improvement projects) will be accepted. Abstracts should be formatted as follows:

  • Background: a concise state of issues evaluated or addressed;
  • Methods: a description of study methods, project, case study, experience, interventions;
  • Results/Lesson Learned: specific findings (can be preliminary), expected outcomes/conclusions, implementation issues, and/or case study solutions;

*Posters that have been previously presented at another conference can be submitted in the existing format.

Acceptance Notification: Presenters will be notified about the status of their submission via email no later than February 20, 2024.

Presenters must be registered for the 2024 UMMC School of Nursing Research and Scholarship Day and are responsible for their own travel and related expenses, though posters will be printed by the SON. Note: The SON will only print posters for current SON faculty, staff and students. Any other presenters will be in charge of printing their own posters.

The UMMC SON will allow for one poster per abstract submission and posters must adhere to the following dimensions: 2’ by 3’ (24” by 36”). Posters that have been previously presented at another conference do not have to be reprinted. Posters must be submitted by Sunday, March 10, 2024, to be printed and paid for by UMMC School of Nursing (current SON faculty, staff and students). Only the top abstracts submitted as a podium presentation will be selected to be presented at the podium. Awards will be given for the top posters.

All abstracts will be included in the UMMC SON Research & Scholarship Day program. The commemorative program will not be copyrighted, and abstracts may be published elsewhere. We request that authors include a notation in their curriculum vitae that their abstracts were presented at the 2024 UMMC School of Nursing Research and Scholarship Day.
