Staffing the first aid tent at Sanderson Farms Championship

By: Anne Norwood, PhD, RN, FNP-BC

For the past six years, the School of Nursing at UMMC has been invited to host the first aid tent at the Sanderson Farms Championship golf tournament, and this year was no different! Sanderson Farms has been a loyal supporter of Children’s of Mississippi, and there is no better way to give back than to support an organization that has done so much for the medical center and the children of Mississippi.

Over 50 faculty, students, RNs, NPs and medical residents volunteered their time to make this first aid tent successful. In addition to volunteers inside the UMMC system, there were multiple NPs and MDs outside of UMMC who gave their time to work in the medical tent. Over 135 golfers, caddies, spectators, and volunteers sought medical attention during the week of October 2 through October 8, with six referrals to the emergency room or their primary care provider. Several people were hit with golf balls, which was the new trend this year along with food poisoning, golf cart injuries, wasp stings and cuts/abrasions from falling.

Overall, it was once again a fantastic opportunity to serve our community as we partnered with the Pro Golf Association (PGA) and Wayne-Sanderson Farms to provide this service. A special ‘thank you’ to Latasha Cox, SON Project Manager II for helping organize the volunteers who signed up and all the faculty and student volunteers who made this possible! The days were long and tiring, but once again, memories were made! We look forward to next year and hope you will join us then!
