About the Division

Under the leadership of Vikas Majithia, MD, MPH, the Division of Rheumatology continues to actively and aggressively pursue its clinical, academic, research and administrative missions. We provide outstanding clinical services to our patients who come from all over the state of Mississippi and surrounding regions. Our fellows as well as our faculty have been recognized as competent clinicians who provide a high quality of patient care in a compassionate manner. The fellows and faculty also serve as educators for the students, residents, and other physicians to enhance the understanding of rheumatic diseases by providing community and institutional education programs.

The division's board-certified academic rheumatologists and rheumatology fellows provide consultative services at the University Hospital, the University of Mississippi Medical Pavilion, and the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Medical Center. The division’s faculty and providers also maintain vigorous outpatient services at the VA Medical Center and the UMMC outpatient clinics both on site and at satellite locations.

The division has increased its focus on scholarship and research in the last 5 years and is currently involved in a number of National Institute of Health sponsored studies, ongoing clinical trials, and investigator-initiated trials. Furthermore, the division provides dedicated focused service programs such as a lupus clinic, a metabolic bone disease and osteoporosis program, and a vasculitis clinic. Future plans are in place to start an inflammatory eye disease/uveitis clinic and a gout clinic.

The division has been and continues to be recognized regionally and nationally as evidenced by our productivity of educational and scientific presentations, abstracts, publications, book chapters and committee appointments. In the last five years, the faculty and trainees of the division have been involved in multiple scholarly projects leading to more than 50 published abstracts, 30 publications and five book chapters. Dr. Majithia was involved in developing and reviewing the rheumatology section of MKSAP-17, writing multiple chapters and questions.

In addition, Dr. Majithia serves on the American Board of Internal Medicine - Rheumatology SEP committee and has previously served on the National Board of Medical Examiners - In-training exam committee and American College of Rheumatology Continuous Assessment Review and Evaluation (CARE) committee.
Currently recognized as one of the largest and most qualified university-based rheumatology groups in the region, we continue to strive for excellence in clinical care, education, scholarship and research.
