First-year School of Dentistry student Tammy Vujanovic came to campus with a mission: help pave the way for 70-plus countries to provide free cleft surgery and other forms of essential cleft care to people in need. A liaison between caregivers and patients, Shukundala “Connie” Champion is a licensed clinical social worker at Children’s of Mississippi’s inpatient psychiatric unit. Surrounded by her growing Hello Kitty collection, Champion helps connect patients with the outpatient care they’ll need to thrive.

People of the U: Paul Sabbatini

Accelerated BSN student Paul Sabbatini was settling in to study one night, but first he needed to write down thoughts that were running through his mind about his chosen profession. Volunteering earlier in the day at one of the COVID-19 field hospitals had inspired his poem, “This is Us.” The poem was voiced by UMMC nurses in a video that’s been viewed more than 22,000 times on the Medical Center’s Facebook page.

There are those at the Medical Center who have worked here even longer than Jay Ferchaud, but few who are so instantly recognizable by sight and by name in practically every office, school, division, department, clinic and lab. For a quarter-century, he has trained his photographer’s eye on the Medical Center, helping tell its story while making many good friends along the way.
