A four-week series, Rewriting Mississippi’s Cancer Story explores how UMMC is addressing the state’s cancer mortality rate, among the nation’s worst, by building a new home for advanced cancer care and research and working toward National Cancer Institute designation.

Shenike Bankston found ways to thrive after a thyroid cancer diagnosis through Survivor University, a free program from the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute for cancer patients around the state.

It's time for a change

Mississippi’s rates of cancer incidence and mortality are among the nation’s highest, but plans to rewrite the state’s cancer story are underway. Later this month, ground will be broken on a center for advanced cancer care and research as work toward earning National Cancer Institute designation continues.
