Women in Mississippi are more likely to experience the loss of an infant than any other state in the nation. Mississippi also leads the nation with the highest rate of maternal deaths. Many factors contribute to these troubling statistics, including a high rate of chronic disease, a high rate of uninsured, trouble accessing prenatal care, and maternity care deserts.

Mississippi also has a high rate of infections that can put pregnancies at risk. Cases of syphilis in women, especially among those who are pregnant, have risen by more than 1000% in the past ten years. Syphilis is easily treated with a shot of penicillin. When untreated, syphilis can pass from mother to baby causing miscarriage, still birth and infant death. Those babies who survive are often afflicted severe complications, including brain damage. Every mother should be checked for syphilis during pregnancy. Mississippi also has some of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea and chlamydia which can adversely affect pregnancies. These infections can be easily treated when they are found.

The Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute (MEWI) is committed to improving pregnancy outcomes by helping expectant mothers connect with the care they need. If you’re pregnant or planning to be and have questions about prenatal care, reproductive health, or where to find a provider, our team can help connect you with resources. Call (601) 815-6394 to connect. We’re ready to provide the resources, answers, and compassionate support you need to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
