At UMMC Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants, our mission is to make sure you and your baby are healthy and to give you a wonderful experience as you bring new life into the world. Our family-centered approach puts mother-baby bonding at the heart of all we do.
As part of the state’s only academic medical center, we deliver highly-specialized care with kindness and compassion. We celebrate each mother and each delivery.
At Wiser Hospital, you’ll find modern facilities and an experienced staff totally focused on you and your baby.
The 31-bed antepartum (post-labor) unit provides care to the high-risk obstetrical patient, such as women with preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, pre-term labor, and other high-risk complications.
The labor and delivery unit provides care to obstetrical patients, including high-risk pregnancies. The comfortable rooms are specially designed for birthing. Many feature advanced monitoring for babies needing extra attention. The unit includes two operating rooms equipped for handling both vaginal and operative deliveries.
Labor and delivery also provides care to postpartum pre-eclampsia/eclampsia patients who require more intensive monitoring.
Our mother baby unit is a special set of private rooms devoted to family-centered care. Here, you can spend time cuddling with your baby while a mother-baby nurse cares for both of you in the comfort and privacy of your own room. All of your baby’s care, including physical exam, screenings, and daily weight check, takes place in your room. This personal attention gives you and your family the chance to ask questions and learn about the care of your newborn, so you’re prepared to care for your baby at home.
Our newborn nursery is also available for mothers who need more recovery time.
Our 15-bed intermediate care nursery is for newborns who are not yet ready to go home but do not require the care of the neonatal intensive care unit. Our intermediate care nursery physicians and nurses are part of a care team including social workers, developmental care specialists, and lactation specialists, all available to help families and infants as needed.
As a Level IV facility, our NICU provides acute care for newborns with health problems, including those that require advanced ventilation (including ECMO) and advanced surgeries, such as open heart procedures to correct congenital heart defects. Our NICU features around-the-clock, specially trained physicians. In addition, all subspecialties, including pediatric neurology, infectious disease, gastroenterology, surgery, genetics, endocrinology, cardiology, and others are in-house 24 hours a day. The specially trained NICU staff includes neonatal nurse practitioners, nurse educators, discharge planning nurses, and social workers. Many of our registered nurses are certified in neonatal resuscitation and/or neonatal care.
