Prenatal Classes

All prenatal classes have been cancelled until further notice due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The obstetrics program at UMMC Women's Care focuses not just on the health of the expectant mom, but also on providing the comfort and security that comes from knowledge and support. We offer a variety of prenatal, preparation, and childbirth classes for parents (and their families) who plan to have their babies delivered at Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants.

Class schedule and registration

All classes are free. Registration is required. To ensure class availability, we recommend registering for classes no later than the fifth month of pregnancy.

Prenatal classes offered at UMMC

Childbirth preparation

Learn about and prepare for labor and birth in this two-part class.

  • Classes meet in Room W020, on the ground floor of Wiser Hospital.
  • Classes are held from 6–9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday.
  • Parking is available in Garage B. 

Childbirth class topics include:

  • Labor and Delivery
  • Relaxation Techniques
  • Pain Relief and Management Options
  • Infant Feeding Options
  • Postpartum Concerns


For those interested in natural childbirth, this class provides a more extensive look at pregnancy and natural birth taught by certified Lamaze instructors. Instruction also includes car seat safety, safe sleep, and safe prenatal exercise tips.

  • Classes are held four consecutive weeks on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
  • Lamaze classes are taught in Room W020, on the ground floor of Wiser Hospital.
  • Parking is available in Garage B.

Breastfeeding class

Deciding how to feed a baby is one of the most important decisions a mother can make. This class is for parents planning to breastfeed and for those considering it. Taught by nationally certified educators, breastfeeding classes provide an opportunity for mothers-to-be to learn the most current information and techniques for a successful breastfeeding experience.

  • Breastfeeding Techniques
  • Pumping and Storing Milk

Newborn care/infant CPR

This class gives new parents the confidence and skills to care for their new baby during the first weeks at home. Taught by American Heart Association instructors, CPR Anytime® teaches correct CPR for infants. Basic infant care, normal newborn characteristics and behaviors, and common parental concerns are also covered.

Wiser Hospital tours

Going into labor can be intimidating, which is why we offer tours of Wiser Hospital. We want expectant mothers and families to feel comfortable with their surroundings before the day of delivery.
