Causes of GERD

A man takes a large bite of a hamburgerGERD is caused by breakdown of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which is a valve that connects the esophagus and the stomach. The valve remains closed except during swallowing, when it opens to allow food to pass from the esophagus into the stomach. Otherwise, a normal LES remains closed to protect the esophagus from stomach acids.

Obesity, smoking and eating large meals (even infrequently), can all contribute to GERD. Over time, you may develop damage to the lining of the esophagus.
