  1. The palatal injury will likely heal spontaneously. Initially, a brief episode of intraoral bleeding, which stops spontaneously, is common. Recommend OTC pain medication for next few days. Instruct parent that eating, speaking, and talking may be difficult for a few days. Soft diet for 5 days. Follow up in one week, or as otherwise instructed by your physician.
  2. Most children do not develop problems, but if parent notices any of the symptoms listed below, contact physician immediately:
  • Decreased level of consciousness
  • Irritability
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness of either arm or leg
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision or convulsions
  • Neck swelling
  • Bleeding from the mouth

Have the parent monitor closely for 48-72 hours.
