The 2024 UMMC Changemakers Gala

On November 1, 2024, we honored two amazing individuals who have helped to shape our institution: Suzan B. Thames and Dr. James E. Keeton. As we reflect on the inaugural Changemakers Gala evening, it reminds us of how two people have the power to bring our community together and create lasting positive change.

It’s also because of our changemakers like Suzan and Dr. Keeton that UMMC can think about tomorrow and what is next. And that’s exactly what we’re doing—our current institutional priority is to improve cancer outcomes in our state.

Mississippi has the highest cancer mortality rates in the nation, and we know all too well the devastation cancer can have on our families, friends and loved ones. UMMC has a vision that all Mississippians can receive the cancer treatment they need without leaving the state, so we are building a state-of-the-art facility to house research and advanced care under one roof. To learn more about this incredible project, please contact Lauren Engle, Director of Special Projects, at lengle@umc.edu or 601-984-1123.

Our changemakers create hope, make our dreams a reality, and enable UMMC to ensure a healthier Mississippi. Suzan and Dr. Keeton are models for demonstrating that when we work together, we can make a meaningful impact that extends far beyond the borders of our state and far beyond our lifetimes. We are extremely indebted to them for all that they have helped UMMC to accomplish!
