Our teachers are fountains of knowledge, and they teach without lecturing. It’s casual but stimulating, so they make learning enjoyable & effective. We are all the patient’s team – anything a medical student suggests gets as much consideration as the advice our attendings make on a treatment plan. The pathology at UMMC is so wide & unusual because of our patient population & being the only academic center & pediatric hospital in the state. This program felt like home from day 1 as a medical student, and it has only grown in my heart since.
True rural medicine – morning rounds at a small hospital, then walk to clinic, maybe give some talks at the local high school & let students shadow; throw in some house calls, ER shifts, and sports medicine at the high school football games. Maybe Peds Heme/Onc later on down the road.
I have a garden, where I harvested squash, corn, peppers, strawberry, & cabbage this year. Also with some flower beds, which help my wife, Bonnie, and I relax in our hammocks and watch the butterflies and hummingbirds feed. I also enjoy geocaching, lazy canoe trips down rivers, and attending local events throughout Mississippi, such as the Belhaven/Jackson Mac & Cheese competition, the Great Delta Bear Affair, or the Wing Dang Doodle Festival. Trips to Mississippi State to watch the Bulldogs play football & baseball also help distract me from studying for boards.
