Main ContentAbout Our Program
Located in Mississippi's capital city of Jackson, our program consistently produces graduates well equipped to pursue a career in either primary care or subspecialty areas. Whether they choose to pursue a profession as a primary care practitioner, a subspecialist, a hospitalist or as faculty at an academic Med/Peds setting, our residents are knowledgeable and prepared for their chosen field.
Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics (Med/Peds) training offers unique experiences in patient care from Neonatology to Geriatrics, and everything in between. Residents at UMMC equally split their time between both departments and are uniquely qualified because of their combined training. Our residents are well respected among their categorical peers, and it is not unusual for one of them to be selected as a chief resident in either categorical program.
Inpatient training occurs at University Hospital, adjoining Children's of Mississippi and nearby G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Medical Center. It is the only tertiary care center in Mississippi. University Hospital is a 722-bed diagnostic and treatment referral center for the entire state. Inpatients total about 27,000 annually with more than 418,000 outpatient and emergency visits to the Level I trauma center every year. The Wallace Connerly Critical Care Tower houses the medical, surgical, cardiology, neurosurgical intensive care units and the bone marrow transplant unit.
Children’s of Mississippi is the only children’s hospital in the state and adjoins University Hospital. With a newly opened wing in 2020, Children’s of Mississippi now has over 150 hospital beds, over 30 private PICU beds, and over 100 private NICU beds, and remains the only Level 4 NICU in Mississippi. Additionally, the new wing of the hospital offers separate radiology suites and procedure rooms for our pediatric population.
The GV. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Medical Center is located across the street from University Hospital and Children's of Mississippi. It is a 160-bed facility that is staffed by physicians dedicated to patient care and resident training. Rotations there offer wonderful experiences in serving the veterans of our nation.
