A member of the first Doctorate of Health Administration graduating class at UMMC, Dr. Guy Giesecke is putting the knowledge, skills and research project he developed from his SHRP studies into his career as CEO of Children’s of Mississippi. Eight youngsters wearing colorful helmets excitedly navigated their bicycles through an obstacle course consisting of a rainbow-tinted tube "bridge," a wooden ramp and a large spare tire bordered by brightly hued pylons while their parents cheered from the sidelines. This wasn't a scene from a typical bike camp, though - It was part of a study being conducted by a physical therapy faculty member in the School of Health Related Professions that seeks to inject more physical activity into the lives of children with Down syndrome. UMMC PT in the pros: Sports resident delivers care at Saints camp

When elite athletes gather at professional football training camps, their therapy and rehabilitation needs are apparent even before the season opens. A new partnership between the New Orleans Saints and UMMC’s Sports Residency Program placed one resident in the August camp to learn about – and provide – physical therapy to NFL players who want to get back on the field and maximize their future playing time.

Video: Saddle up! SHRP students' activities bolster horse trail therapy

Various interactive activities designed by occupational therapy students at UMMC are helping patients develop their fine motor and speech and language skills - while on horseback. The OT Class of 2020 in SHRP developed the creative activities as part of a class project. With gentle guidance from staff members, OT and physical therapy students and two horse "therapists" - Valdez and Jose - patients had the opportunity to exercise their skills on the trail July 20.

#UMMCGrad18: SHRP graduate overcomes rare genetic disorder to earn PT degree

When specialists couldn't tell Alyse Green whether her rare genetic disorder would prevent her from obtaining a physical therapy degree, the Meridian native decided to give it a shot. Three years later, she has bravely persevered through daily paralytic episodes to earn her place at UMMC's 2018 Commencement.

Board names Delta physical therapist SHRP Alumnus of the Year

Because of her "can-do" spirit and her never-ending dedication to patients in rural areas of Mississippi, Dr. Carmen Cooper-Oguz has been named School of Health Related Professions Alumnus of the Year by the SHRP Alumni Board. The former wound care specialist now serves in an administrative role at North Sunflower Medical Center in Ruleville.
