October observances: Shining a light on cancer care

As we step into October, it's time to note two significant causes: Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Liver Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. October is a vital opportunity to promote early detection through regular screenings, educate about risk factors and support those affected by the disease. Globally, breast cancer caused about 670,000 deaths in 2022, according to the World Health Organization.

Early detection can save lives. The American Cancer Society reports a five-year survival rate of 99% when breast cancer is detected early and is in the localized stage.

Liver Cancer Awareness Month

Liver cancer is among the fastest-rising causes of cancer-related deaths globally. Liver Cancer Awareness Month in October brings needed attention to this silent disease, which often shows no symptoms in its early stages. The most common type, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is often linked to underlying liver conditions such as hepatitis B or C, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) or alcohol-related liver damage.

Raising awareness can lead to earlier diagnoses, improved treatments and better outcomes. This month, we also aim to educate on prevention—such as hepatitis vaccination, reducing alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy weight and regular monitoring for those at high risk.
