Lung Cancer Roundtable is Nov. 7-8

Dr. Pierre De Delva, chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, is chairing the Mississippi Lung Cancer Roundtable annual meeting Nov. 7-8 at the Sheraton Refuge and Conference Center. Free CME hours are offered.

The evening begins with a networking social and dinner at the hotel at 5:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 7. On Nov. 8, De Delva will welcome attendees at the opening session, which begins at 8:30 a.m. A lung cancer survivor’s story will follow, as will the keynote address by Dr. Gerard A. Silvestri, Hillenbrand Professor of Thoracic Oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina, on lung cancer screening updates, which starts at 9 a.m. 

Other facets of the event on Nov. 8 include: 

  • Tobacco Cessation across the Lung Cancer Continuum by Dr. Jennifer Cofer, executive director of the EndTobacco Program of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, at 10:25 a.m. 
  • Early Detection of Lung Cancer: Is There a Role for Artificial Intelligence? by Dr. Bill Mayfield, medical director for lung cancer screening and incidental lung nodule programs, Wellstar Health System, at 11 a.m. 
  • Sybil – A Model to Predict Future Lung Cancer Risk by Raymond U. Osarogiagbon, chief scientist and director of the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program at Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp., at 11:35 a.m. 
  • Updates in Oncogene Driven Early-Stage Lung Cancer Management by Dr. Devika Das, division director of hematology and oncology at UMMC and associate director for clinical affairs at the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute, at 12:45 p.m. 
  • Differentiating Benign and Malignant Pulmonary Nodules with Silvestri at 1:30 p.m. 
  • Small Cell Lung Cancer Updates with Dr. Kelsey Koch, assisant professor of thoracic surgery at UMMC, and Dr. Phil Lammers, a medical oncologist at Baptist Cancer Center, at 2:05 p.m.  

A Community Track will include: 

  • Engaging Communities in Cancer Prevention by Dr. Caroline Compretta, associate director of community outreach and engagement at UMMC, and Dr. Justin Turner, assistant professor of the UMMC John D. Bower School of Population Health. 
  • Panel Discussion: Connecting the Community to Lung Cancer Resources with Dr. Daniel Edney, state health officer, Dr. Jason Coker, national director of Together for Hope, and Beth Dickson-Gavney, senior director for health equity and community engagement for LUNGevity. Compretta will moderate the discussion, which begins at 1:30 p.m. 

The Roundtable’s closing session, with De Delva and Amy Ellis, associate director for state partnerships with the American Cancer Society, will be from 2:45 to 3 p.m.
