Primary care for adults

Finding a doctor near you for primary care is important for your ongoing health. Internal medicine doctors, who focus on adult care, serve as primary care physicians. Doctors in this medical specialty only see patients age 18 and older.

An internal medicine doctor will:

  • Be familiar with your normal health to more easily spot changes that may need attention
  • Care for you, with personal knowledge of your health history, if you get sick
  • Help you manage any chronic health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, lung disease, heart failure, or kidney disease
  • Know the tests, vaccinations, and other routine care you need to stay healthy in every phase of life
  • Arrange for you to see specialists, if needed
  • See you for annual wellness visits to keep an eye on the overall “big picture” of your health
  • Treat you if you get the flu, an infection, or any other unexpected illness that needs medical attention

UMMC Internal Medicine Physicians: Unmatched access to expert care

At UMMC, our general internal medicine specialists are backed by the full resources of Mississippi’s only academic medical center, including consultation with in-house specialists found nowhere else in the state. From common joint pain to rare diseases, our internal medicine doctors can arrange for your care if you need expertise for specific concerns.  Our team includes attending physicians, internal medicine resident physicians, and nurse practitioners.

Call for a same-day appointment, in person or online

Our internal medicine doctors are accepting new patients, and appointments are available from 7:40 a.m. to 4:20 p.m., Monday-Friday. Same-day appointments are also available, and, with three clinics, you can see a doctor at a location convenient to home or work. We also offer telehealth appointments for established patients, and our teams can walk you through the process to connect on your phone, tablet, or desktop computer.
