Medical student away rotations will resume in July 2021. All students must remain masked, remain vigilant about hand hygiene, and respond quickly to any COVID-like symptoms. In addition, students must be actively screened for fever or COVID-related symptoms and exposure upon entry into teaching spaces.
Externships in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery are offered from August through January. This four-week clinical rotation is designed for students who are interested in pursuing graduate medical education in otolaryngology. Students work with our faculty in the clinical and didactic setting and actively participate in all aspects of patient care at the intern level. A 15-minute presentation to the department on a topic of his/her choice is required.
Interested students should apply through VSAS. Only senior medical students enrolled in good standing in an LCME- or American Osteopathic Association-accredited school, in the U.S. or Canada, will be offered a senior elective in this School of Medicine. For more information about the application process, contact:
After review of the application and verification of the applicant's credentials, the Registrar's Office will notify the otolaryngology education administrator for approval of the elective. For questions regarding the Otolaryngology externship, contact:
Availability of specific dates is determined on a first-come, first-served basis.
To comply with UMMC and state regulations, accepted visiting students must be fingerprinted on the first day of the rotation. Note: There is a $50 fee for this service.
As an added convenience, we are pleased to announce that students will be given the opportunity to interview with the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery during their rotation.
