Welcome to the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. Our mission is to achieve excellence in research, education and service programs.
The department’s diverse research programs include protein-protein interactions, drug delivery, histone structure and function, Cajal bodies and RNA processing, p53, cytochrome oxidase and mitochondrial function, mechanisms responsible for cancer initiation and metastases and novel peptide delivery systems, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and cellular mechanisms responsible for elevated blood pressure. Our research is supported by NIH, NSF and other national foundations. Several of our primary and secondary faculty are members of the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute and the Women's Health Research Center.
The department’s PhD program in cell and molecular biology strives for each student to excel in coursework and research and to develop critical thinking and communication skills. With a strong knowledge base and skill set, graduating students will be equipped to pursue a variety of different career options. In addition, our faculty instruct medical, dental and graduate students, and have won numerous teaching awards.
