Hanna Johnson Broome, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. A native of Madison, MS, she received her BS in biological sciences from Mississippi College. She taught high school for two years before returning to school at UMMC in the Department of Biochemistry.

Dr. Broome earned her PhD in Biochemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Hebert and then joined Dr. Michael Ryan’s lab as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at UMMC. She accepted her first faculty position as an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Mississippi College, where she spent four years teaching courses in biology, genetics, and anatomy at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Dr. Broome returned to UMMC in 2018 and has served in a number of administrative roles since then, including Director of the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences program, Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Recruitment in the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences, and Chief Student Affairs Officer for the institution.

Currently, Dr. Broome is the Associate Director of the Cell and Molecular PhD Program. She teaches in the Fundamental Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Cell and Molecular Biology Methods courses in this program. Additionally, she teaches master’s students and dental students in the Fundamental Biochemistry course and serves as an academic advisor for master’s students. She also serves as the Director of Center Effectiveness and Partnership Development for the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research. In this role, she works to enhance communication between core personnel, with research investigators, and with institutional leaders, and to improve the tracking of center utilization and outcomes.
