Residency Program in Sports Physical Therapy Requirements
The residency program in sports physical therapy includes the following requirements:
Admission requirements
- Licensed to practice physical therapy in the state of Mississippi prior to beginning the program
- Fulfillment of the Management of Injury and Illness Requirement. Click here.
- Current CPR certification
- Compliance with all UMMC employment requirements
Application
Applications for the residency are accepted from October through December, prior to the beginning of the residency in late June Experienced physical therapists and new graduates are encouraged to apply. The residency accepts applications through Residency and Fellowship Physical Therapy Centralized Application Service (RF-PTCAS). The University of Mississippi Medical Center Physical Therapy Residency in Sports will be participating in the standardized Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program Match for the upcoming application cycle. This process will fill our one available Resident position for our upcoming start date: June 20, 2025. Residency completion requirements
Sports physical therapy residencies require the following specific experiences during the program:- A minimum of 1,500 hours of clinical practice. Included in the 1,500 hours must be:
- A minimum of 150 hours of mentored practice
- A minimum of 300 hours of planned education experiences (including rounds, independent study, Journal Club, educational sessions with faculty, etc.)
- A minimum of 200 athletic venue hours must include athletic event coverage of which 50 of those hours may be within a training room facility.
The Sports physical therapy residents are required to satisfactorily complete the following during the residency period:
- Orientation processes for each clinical site
- APTA clinical skills performance evaluation tools for physical therapists
- APTA core values
- Assessments of abilities and skills
- Education/teaching module for students and/or professional staff (minimum of one module)
- Presentation to local, regional or national organization
- Demonstrate competency in the 4 required in-clinic live patient exams by obtaining a score of 80% or greater.
- Demonstrate competency in the 4 required technique exams by obtaining a score of 80% or greater.
- Demonstrate competency in the 4 required functional testing exams by obtaining a score of 80% or greater.
- Demonstrate competency in the 2 required on-field examinations by obtaining a score of 80% or greater.
- Demonstrate competency in 4-quarterly examinations by obtaining a score of 80% or greater.
