Hand Surgery Fellowship
UMMC Hand Surgery Fellowship
Welcome to the Hand Surgery Fellowship Program at UMMC!
The UMMC Hand Surgery Fellowship functions as a combined Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery Hand Fellowship program, giving all fellows the ultimate breadth and depth of exposure to the field. All applicants to either the Orthopaedic Hand Fellowship or the Plastic Surgery Hand Fellowship will be considered for BOTH positions.
At the University of Mississippi Medical Center, hand fellows are immersed in the full spectrum of hand and upper extremity surgery through a rigorous clinical and academic experience.
Between Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery, hand fellows receive extensive exposure to the entirety of hand and upper extremity surgery. At the only Level 1 trauma center, the only Children’s Hospital, and the only academic medical center in the State of Mississippi, hand fellows will benefit from an extensive catchment area and be exposed early on to the entirety of elective hand surgery and trauma in both children and adults.
The University of Mississippi Medical Center is a high-volume and high-acuity center for hand and upper extremity pathology. The hand fellows will perform surgery for trauma (finger/hand/wrist fractures and dislocations, distal radius and ulnar fractures, complex soft tissue injuries and loss, nerve injuries, and revascularization/replantation), upper extremity burns, compressive neuropathies, arthritis, brachial plexus injuries, birth palsies, microsurgical reconstruction, cancer, the full extent of congenital hand anomalies, as well as the management of elbow and shoulder pathology.
As a hand surgery fellow, you will work directly with multiple board-certified hand surgery faculty in the treatment of patients in both the clinic setting and in the operating room. Additionally, you will work closely with Occupational Therapists and Certified Hand Therapists to design and oversee rehabilitation plans for your patients, an absolutely critical step in achieving successful outcomes.
The objective of this fellowship program is to graduate hand surgeons who have a keen eye for the diagnosis of hand pathology; effectively navigate the indications for non-operative and operative interventions; and exhibit the diligence to follow patients longitudinally. We are proud to graduate hand surgery fellows who are technically-capable and safe in delivering the absolute highest quality of advanced care to their patients in every practice setting. We feel confident that at UMMC, we are preparing hand surgery graduates for successful certification of added qualification in Surgery of the Hand (CAQ/SOTH).
At UMMC, you will have the opportunity to work with plastic surgery and orthopaedic surgery faculty in a variety of settings including our major academic University Hospital, Children's of Mississippi, St. Dominic’s community hospital, the VA Medical Center, and in the private practice setting, providing you with extensive exposure to multiple practice and employment settings.
With our devotion to education, a philosophy of teamwork and hospitality, and an environment that fosters early clinical independence, we believe the University of Mississippi Medical Center offers hand fellowship training that is an outstanding opportunity to enhance one's expertise as a hand surgeon. We are proud to carry on and contribute to a tradition of excellence in education, research, and patient care at UMMC.
