Prem, Anand M., M.D.
Specialties: Chronic Pain Management
Gender: Male
Biography: After initial training in some of the most prestigious institutions in India, I came to the United States in 1996. I graduated from the Anesthesiology residency program at the University of Michigan and an Interventional Pain Management fellowship at Henry Ford hospital in Michigan. Over the past 23 years, I have expanded my expertise in pain management by keeping abreast of the latest developments in the field, incorporating the most advanced techniques in interventional pain management. I have been solely responsible for the introduction of at least ten new techniques to our pain practice here at the University of MS, allowing our patients to have access to cutting edge interventional procedures they would otherwise have not had access to, keeping us competitive in the local market despite obvious disadvantages in terms of payor mix. As Pain Center Medical Director, I have overseen the continued growth of our clinic practice with sustained annual increase in the number of patients, helping us grow our pain fellowship from the 1 candidate yearly in 2008 to 5 fellows currently. I have had the busiest clinical practice among the 5 providers in our clinic over the past decade. In addition to my clinical expertise, I have taken on lead roles in departmental administration when I was appointed Interim Chair of the department during a period of uncertainty and restored stability while continuing to move the department forward. I have been a champion for the trainees in my role as Associate program Director of the Residency program. My educational contributions have been recognized with numerous (seven) "Teacher of the Year" awards from the residents and fellows.
My Approach to Healthcare
"Provide the best care in the most humane way possible" and "service with a smile" sum up my philosophy to patient care.
As a Pain Management Specialist, with Pain having no objective measurement tool, it is my duty to believe every patient when they come into the clinic. Too often these patients are stigmatized as "whiny" or "drug seekers". I consider it my duty to first listen to the patient, validate their complaints and then objectively evaluate potential causes and formulate an effective treatment plan. The patient must "buy in" for any treatment plan to be effective and that starts with building a good rapport. I am committed to continually acquiring new skills to keep pace with the rapid advances in Interventional Pain and offer these options to patients who have limited access to "state of the art" Pain Management. Training the next generation of Anesthesiologists and Pain practitioners to be the best Pain physicians they can be is a responsibility I do not take lightly and being an effective role model is something I strive for daily.
