Biography

I grew up in rural, mountainous Pennsylvania, where a kid without a bike would not see his friends outside of school!. My father was a carpenter and general contractor, and my brother and I worked with him on the construction of residential homes from the time we could carry a 2x4. We learned what hard work was at an early age! I always had an interest in astronomy, and when it came time to go to college, I attended the Univ. of Arizona, enrolling in the Physics program. I soon realized that despite my initial interests, I had an equal penchant for neuroanatomy following an introductory psychology course. I ultimately switched majors and followed through on my neuroscience interests. In grad school I continued learning more neuroanatomy, and found the intricacies of the auditory system (especially the cochlea) spoke to both my physical and biological sciences interests by way of the interaction of the physical signals with biological sensors. During my postdoc in the Molecular Neurobiology Lab at the Salk Institute, I learned how to manipulate gene expression to better understand how biological systems function. I continue to this day to study the physical interaction of sound with the inner ear and the biological consequences of this interaction.
